N-Propyl Acetate

N-propyl acetate is an organic compound with a clear, colorless ester with a different acetate odor. It is flammable and highly miscible with all common organic solvents like alcohols, esters, ketones, and glycols but slightly miscible in water.

How is n-propyl acetate made?

Chemically, n-propyl acetate is most commonly manufactured by direct esterification of 1-propanol and acetic acid. Strong acids like sulfuric or methanesulfonic are used to heat them.

Alternative methods include the ester exchange of 1-propanol with ethyl acetate.

What are the properties of n-propyl acetate?

Following are the properties of n-propyl acetate;

  • n-propyl acetate is a colorless liquid
  • It has a characteristic pungent alcoholic odor.
  • It is 99.83% pure.
