Special Denatured Spirits

Specially denatured spirits are alcohol or rum that have been treated with denaturants to render them unfit to be used in beverages. A Specially Denatured Spirits (SDS) product consists of specially denatured alcohols (SDAs) and specially denatured rums (SDRs).

An industrial alcohol user permit is required to procure, use, recover, and deal with SDS.

What are the properties of special denatured spirits?

Following are the properties of special denatured spirits;

  • Ethanol present in SDS makes it poisonous.
  • It has a sour taste and foul or nausea-like smell to discourage recreational consumption.
  • It is sometimes dyed so that it can be identified visually.
  • Pyridine and methanol each together make SDS poisonous.
  • Denatonium makes it bitter.
